Smiling isn’t always necessary in a headshot, especially if it doesn’t feel natural. A good photographer knows how to capture authentic emotion and personality in various ways. After all, your headshot is often your first impression with potential clients or employers.

The eyes tell a story, whether you’re smiling or not. A relaxed face, a slight tilt of the head, or even looking away from the camera can create a more natural, genuine feel. The goal is to feel comfortable in front of the camera, and the right photographer will make that happen.

Sidenote: AI is not the answer to a natural-looking headshot. While AI is handy in some disciplines, it tends to stretch the skin, exaggerate jawlines, lose body parts and make the eyes look unnatural—think “Children of the Damned!” It’s not exactly the look most people are going for unless you want to channel a plastic doll. Real photographers know how to highlight your best features without over-editing or making you look like someone else.

Most importantly, keep your headshot up to date at least yearly. HR managers and placement professionals often mention that outdated photos can harm your credibility and create a disconnect.

Even if you’re not thrilled about getting your picture taken, try to have fun with the process. If you’re enjoying yourself—even a little—it will show in the final result. A professional photographer will help you feel at ease, whether you’re doing a live session or working remotely.
